Notation Guide
This page explains the tile notation system used throughout RIICHI~SENSEI.
Tile Notation
Each tile is represented by a number (or position) followed by a suit letter:
| Suit | Letter | Japanese | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Characters (Manzu) | m | 萬子 | 1m, 5m, 9m |
| Circles (Pinzu) | p | 筒子 | 1p, 5p, 9p |
| Bamboo (Souzu) | s | 索子 | 1s, 5s, 9s |
| Honors | z | 字牌 | 1z-7z (see below) |
Honor Tile Numbers
| Code | Tile | Japanese |
|---|---|---|
| 1z | East Wind | 東 (ton) |
| 2z | South Wind | 南 (nan) |
| 3z | West Wind | 西 (shaa) |
| 4z | North Wind | 北 (pei) |
| 5z | White Dragon | 白 (haku) |
| 6z | Green Dragon | 發 (hatsu) |
| 7z | Red Dragon | 中 (chun) |
Compact Notation
Multiple tiles of the same suit can be written together: 123m = 1m, 2m, 3m. 456p = 4p, 5p, 6p. Spaces or pipes (|) separate groups for readability: 123m 456p 789s 11z.
Red Fives (Aka Dora)
Red five tiles are written as 0m, 0p, 0s to distinguish them from normal fives. They function identically to 5m/5p/5s for hand completion but add 1 dora bonus each.
Example Hands
123m 456p 789s 55z — Four sequences + pair of haku
11m 22p 33s 44m 55p 66s 77z — Seven pairs (chiitoitsu)
19m 19p 19s 1234567z — Kokushi musou (+ one duplicate)
